Newborn’s Face Cut During Emergency C-Section, Requires 13 Stitches

Denver Newborn Suffers Facial Laceration During Emergency C-Section

A Denver family is seeking answers after their newborn daughter, Kyanni Williams, sustained a significant facial injury during an emergency cesarean section at Denver Health Medical Center. The incident occurred when the medical team, responding to a sudden loss of the baby’s heartbeat, performed an urgent C-section. Upon delivery, Kyanni was found to have a deep cut on her left cheek, necessitating 13 stitches administered by a plastic surgeon .

Reazjhana Williams, Kyanni’s mother, had initially planned for a natural birth. However, after being given medication to accelerate labor, complications arose, leading to the emergency procedure. The baby’s father, Damarqus Williams, expressed distress over the unexpected injury, noting the medical staff attributed the cut to Kyanni’s proximity to the placenta wall during surgery .

Medical professionals acknowledge that while lacerations during C-sections are possible, they are exceedingly rare. A study by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found that only 0.7% of over 37,000 cesarean deliveries resulted in skin lacerations .

In response to the incident, Denver Health stated: “While this is a known medical complication in emergency C-sections, our focus is always on providing care in the best interest of the mother and child. At Denver Health, the safety and well-being of our patients is our number one priority”.

The Williams family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover legal expenses as they consider pursuing legal action. The campaign description reads: “We went to DENVER HEALTH HOSPITAL to deliver our daughter Kyanni Williams [who] was [born] during a cesarean and during that process, she was cut deeply on her left cheek which caused her to get 13 stitches in her face. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!! Don’t really have the funds for a lawyer please help as much as possible. Thank You”.

As Kyanni recovers at home, her family continues to seek clarity and accountability regarding the circumstances that led to her injury.
