In September 2019, 19-year-old Loren Schauers from Great Falls, Montana, faced a life-altering decision after a devastating construction accident. While operating a forklift on a bridge, the vehicle veered off course and plunged 50 feet, pinning Loren beneath it. The accident crushed his lower body and right arm, leaving him conscious throughout the ordeal.
Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors presented Loren with a harrowing choice: undergo a hemicorporectomy—amputation of his body below the waist—or face certain death. Demonstrating remarkable resolve, Loren reportedly responded, “I don’t care if I’m just a head on a plate, I want to live.”
Following the surgery, Loren embarked on a challenging journey of recovery and adaptation. He and his then-girlfriend, Sabia, documented their experiences on their YouTube channel, “Sabia and Loren,” offering insights into their daily lives, medical procedures, and emotional resilience.
Over the years, Loren has made significant strides in managing phantom pain and adjusting to his new reality. In a 2024 update, he shared that his pain was more controlled and that he and Sabia had found a sense of normalcy, even attending events like Lollapalooza.
Loren’s story has inspired many, highlighting the human capacity for resilience and the importance of support systems in overcoming adversity.
