Single Mother Who Survived Cancer Four Times Fatally Shot in Tragic Colorado Incident

Jennifer James, a 49-year-old single mother of four from Berthoud, Colorado, who courageously battled cancer over two decades, was tragically killed on April 28, 2025, when a stray bullet struck her inside her home. James, undergoing chemotherapy for a fifth cancer diagnosis, managed to call 911 after being hit but succumbed to her injuries before help arrived.

The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Ebenezer Worku, claimed he accidentally discharged his Glock 22 handgun while cleaning it in his parked car outside James’ house. One bullet penetrated a window and fatally struck James in her arm and chest. Worku was identified using surveillance footage and license plate tracking and has been charged with first-degree murder. He is being held in Larimer County Jail on a $1.25 million cash-only bond .

James’ eldest daughter, Ashley, described her mother as a selfless and devoted parent who dedicated her life to her children. A celebration of her life was held on May 14, with the community mourning the loss of a woman remembered for her strength and resilience.
