Former Child Star Sophie Nyweide Dies at 24

Sophie Nyweide, a former child actress known for her roles in films such as Mammoth (2009) and Noah (2014), has died at the age of 24. Her family confirmed her passing on April 14, 2025, in Bennington, Vermont.

Nyweide began her acting career at the age of six, debuting in the 2006 film Bella. She went on to appear in several notable films, including Margot at the Wedding, An Invisible Sign, and Noah. In Mammoth, she portrayed Jackie, the daughter of characters played by Michelle Williams and Gael GarcĂa Bernal.

According to a now-deleted obituary posted by her family, Nyweide struggled with trauma and self-medicated to cope, ultimately leading to her untimely death. Despite support from loved ones and professionals, she reportedly resisted treatment. Her mother, actress Shelly Gibson, emphasized that her daughter’s acting career was a positive experience and not a contributing factor to her suffering.

A death certificate obtained by Entertainment Weekly revealed that Nyweide was pregnant at the time of her death, though further details were not disclosed.

In lieu of flowers, her family has requested donations be made to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) in her memory.

Nyweide is remembered as a kind and artistic individual whose performances left a lasting impression on audiences.
