Earwigs: Harmless but Unwelcome
Earwigs don’t bite or harm humans, but that doesn’t mean we want them in our homes or gardens. Many gardeners have noticed a spike in earwig activity lately. Personally, I’ve seen more in my garden this year than ever before.
If you’re spotting them often, especially near your house, it might be time to take action.
A Simple DIY Trap That Works
Alicia Alexander, a Facebook user, shared a clever, easy method to catch earwigs. She filled a shallow bowl with about half a cup of olive oil and placed it outside on her deck.
Within 24 hours, the bowl had trapped a surprising number of earwigs. After 36 hours, the results were even more dramatic.
Why Olive Oil Works
Earwigs are oddly attracted to olive oil. They crawl into the bowl, drawn by the scent, but can’t climb back out.
This natural trap works without harsh chemicals, mess, or complicated setups. Just a small bowl of oil, and the earwigs are contained.
Check for Hidden Causes
If you’re seeing more earwigs than usual, it could signal a bigger problem. Earwigs often gravitate toward damp or rotting wood.
Inspect decks, porches, and the foundation for moisture or decay. Addressing these issues may prevent future infestations and protect your home.
Enjoy Your Garden Again
If earwigs have been disrupting your outdoor time, this olive oil trick is a natural, budget-friendly solution.
A simple bowl of oil might be all you need to keep these pests away and enjoy your garden in peace.
