On June 30, 2024, a tragic collision occurred on the Bruce Highway near Gumlu, Queensland, involving a Greyhound bus and a four-wheel drive towing a caravan. The accident claimed the lives of three women: 56-year-old Townsville grandmother Emma “Alli” Sailor, and two German tourists, Aliya Tonga, 21, and Marissa Martin, 33. The bus, carrying 33 passengers, veered into the oncoming lane before the collision, causing it to leave the road and come to rest on nearby train tracks.

Emma Sailor was traveling with her daughter and four grandchildren, who survived the crash. She was remembered as a devout Christian, choir leader, and a compassionate individual who deeply cared for her family and community. Her sudden passing has left her family and the Townsville community in mourning.

Following an extensive investigation, the 52-year-old bus driver from North Ward was charged with five counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm. He appeared before the Brisbane Magistrates Court and was scheduled to reappear at the Bowen Magistrates Court on September 24, 2024.
The incident also left several passengers injured, with two men, aged 23 and 24, initially in critical condition. The crash prompted a significant response from emergency services and has had a profound impact on the local community.
Greyhound Australia expressed deep sympathies to those affected and committed to assisting with the ongoing investigation.
